My original, porcelain-coated grates had chipped and were starting to rust. Since the rest of the grill is still in great shape (after changing the flavor bars to stainless steel too), I decided to try these stainless steel grates. I was concerned at first because they were so much lighter and thinner than the iron ones. But they seem to work fine. I still get a good sear when the grates are hot and the meats don't seem to stick to these grates any more than they did to the originals. So I'm happy with the purchase, and I think these grates will last a long time.

After having to replace some parts on the burners, I was pleased to update my six year old Weber with new SS cooking grates. They are so much better than the original porcelain grates that had rusted through. I recommend this purchase plus they were $20 less than at the Weber website store. The grates that came with the grill were rusting and the enamel was flaking off so we purchased the stainless to replace them. These grates are easy to clean and expect they will last for the life of the grill.

These stainless steel grates seem to be the best for my mature Silver B grill.
I previously tried both the cast iron and porcelain grates. Because I like to sear meats at high temperature it was difficult to keep the cast iron grates seasoned and they rusted. The porcelain chipped off the next set of grates (adding crunch to my food) and they then rusted.
So far the stainless grates work well. They are easy to clean and tolerate high temperatures.
I also purchased a cast iron griddle (Weber 7542 Cast Iron Griddle) which seems like an excellent way to sear steaks because it holds a lot of heat and transfers that energy to the meat very quickly. The steaks can then be finished on the grill.

The original porcelain enameled cast iron cooking grates that came with my Weber Genesis Silver B Grill were starting to look awful. They had not exactly rusted through, but I think by the end of the summer, they would have been "history." I was not in favor of cooking on them for another season because I didn't want anything strange or rusty on my food so I searched the Weber website and saw the stainless replacement, but they were so expensive that I was hesitant to buy them.
Of course, since I am a huge fan of Amazon, I searched here and found the stainless steel grates at an amazing price, at least $20 less than Weber and free shipping. They were shipped super fast and they fit my grill perfectly.
Along with new stainless flavor bars, which I also purchased from Amazon, my grill just about looks brand new. The last items that I need and one that seems to be the most difficult to find are the warming baskets. I cannot seem to find ones that fit the Silver B grill or if you can find them they take forever to be delivered.
I am very pleased with the new grates and look forward to alot of summer grill cooking.
